History of Venetian Blinds

June 4, 2022

Venetian blinds have been around in some form or another for centuries. In this blog entry, the Boca Raton Venetian blind installation experts here at Design Your Blinds will detail the history of Venetian Blinds.

Venetian Blinds History

Venetian blinds were invented in the 1700s in Persia. They were originally made of wooden plates placed together horizontally. These early Venetian blinds were made of two inch wooden strips that are tied together with cloth ribbons. Venetian blinds were then patented in 1769 by the Englishman Edward Bevan. In the 1700s, Venetian blinds were first installed in a church in Philadelphia, and became more popular in the United States based on the advertisement of the British John Webster. It’s rumored that Venetian blinds were used in Independence Hall when the Declaration of Independence was signed.

Venetian Blinds Evolutions and Updates

John Hampton was the first to modernize Venetian blinds technology – and modern day Venetian blinds are built according to his updated designs. The company Hunter Douglas was the first to create aluminum blinds in the 1940s – and in the 1960s, mini-blinds, with their single inch slats were invented (later becoming a .5 inch slat.)  Modern Venetian blinds can match rooms and windows of all sizes. There’s a wide range of Venetian blind types currently available. Wooden Venetian blinds are built of strong quality wood, offering a level of unparalleled elegance that even the most distinguished homeowners enjoy. Wooden Venetian blinds are available in a large selection of colors. Aluminum Venetian blinds have a popular metallic finish, are lightweight, flame resistant, and last a long time.
